Preparations for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season are already underway as teams are starting to gear up. Keeping the tournament and upcoming auctions in mind, IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have made their new moves.
The 2016 champions have announced their support staff for the 2022 campaign and the list contains some of the greats of the game. Brian Lara, Dale Steyn, Muttiah Muralitharan are a few names that will be part of the roster.
With the addition of two more teams for the upcoming season, the IPL will be a revamped version as now only three players can be retained by each team. With the date of the mega auctions also confirmed, SRH have wasted no time in announcing their roster. Former coach Tom Moody and former India cricketer Hemang Badani will also be part of the franchise’s support staff.
VVS Laxman, who served as the mentor of the SRH side in recent years will not be involved as he has taken charge of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. Lara and Muralitharan, both considered as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, will have the task of motivating the young guns.
Former player of SRH
Steyn on the other hand, represented SRH from 2013 to 2015 and will be familiar with the surroundings.
The biggest asset however will be the tactics of coach Moody. He had been involved with SRH since 2013 and guided them to glory in 2016. He also was the man in charge when they finished runners-up in 2018 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In his seven seasons as coach, the team appeared in the playoffs on six occasions.
SRH have retained skipper Kane Williamson, young pacer Umran Malik and all-rounder Abdul Samad in the retention window. The big surprise came in the form of former captain David Warner, who was not retained and released by the franchise. Jonny Bairstow will also consider himself unlucky as he was not retained either.
The IPL auctions will take place in February while the season is set to begin in April 2022 (dates subject to change in case of Covid-19 outbreak).
