In a big turn of events, the Under-19 World Cup 2024 has been relocated to South Africa from Sri Lanka after the Islanders lost the hosting rights following International Cricket Council's (ICC) decision to suspend the Sri Lanka Cricket's membership with immediate effect for excessive political interference.
Despite the ongoing administrative turmoil within Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the ICC has confirmed that the country will continue to participate in both bilateral cricket and ICC events. However, as a consequence of government interference in SLC's affairs, the ICC will take control of funding for the cricketing body. This decision has led to the relocation of the upcoming Under-19 Cricket World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa, the same country that hosted the Women's Under-19 T20 World Cup earlier this year. South Africa's well-established infrastructure and experience hosting major cricketing events were key factors in this decision.
"It was a unanimous decision by the board that the suspension cannot be lifted. Cricket in the country will continue as normal," a source told Cricbuzz.
The upcoming Under-19 Cricket World Cup marks the 15th edition of the tournament, with India aiming to defend their title, having secured victory for the fifth time in the West Indies in 2022. Fifteen other teams will compete for the coveted trophy, ensuring a thrilling and competitive spectacle.
To enhance the tournament's format and excitement, a new Super Six stage has been introduced following the Group stage. This additional stage will determine the semi-finalists, adding an extra layer of drama and anticipation to the competition.
The 16 participating teams have been divided into four groups of four, ensuring a balanced and evenly matched tournament. Defending champions India will face off against Bangladesh, Ireland, and USA in Group A. Group B features England, South Africa, West Indies, and Scotland, while Group C consists of Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Nepal make up Group D. With 41 matches scheduled from January to February, the tournament promises to showcase the exceptional talent and potential of the next generation of cricket stars.
