Virender Sehwag in contention to become Team India's next chief selector BUT there's a catch

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still look for a regular chief selector for Team India since Chetan Sharma stepped down from the top post six months before following a sting operation. With just few months to the all-important ODI World Cup 2023 in India, BCCI will like to fill the post of chief selector's post as soon as possible.

As of now, Shiv Sundar Das has been appointed as Team India's interim chief selector after the ouster of Chetan Sharma.

But one name which is in contention for the top post is former India's explosive batter Virender Sehwag. It has been learnt that Sehwag has been asked to represent North Zone in the selection committee and succeed Chetan Sharma as Team India's chief selector. But there is a catch as going by the report it has also been learnt that Sehwag is not interested for the role because of the not so lucrative salary for the top post.

Earlier, Sehwag had revealed that BCCI was interested in him taking up the head coach’s role, but it went to Anil Kumble. And now, a top BCCI official, who is privy to the development, made a sensational revelation that Sehwag is likely to reject the chief selector's post over less salary.

Notably, the chairman of the senior selection panel gets Rs 1 crore annually while the four other members are paid Rs 90 lakh per year. The last time the selection panel was headed by reputed former cricketers was when former captains Dilip Vengsarkar (2006-2008) and Krishnamachari Srikkanth (2008-2012) were at the helm.

"During CoA’s time, Viru was asked to apply for head coach’s job and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself and also the pay package isn’t something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature. But if we talk about stature, only he makes the cut from North Zone,” a BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“It is not that BCCI can’t pay a chairman of selectors at least Rs 4-5 crore. It can actually solve a lot of these conflict of interest issues which prevent prominent players from even thinking of coming into selection committee,” the source added.

So far since his international retirement in 2015, Sehwag has never held an administrative position with any cricket body.
