Netherlands men's cricket team's head coach and former Australian cricketer Ryan Campbell has been discharged from the hospital after weeks of suffering from a cardiac arrest. Recently, Campbell woke up from coma (induced by doctors) with no damage to his brain.
Further reports have also revealed that the cardiac arrest was not a result of heart attack. Also, there was no damage to 50-year-old's heart.
Campbell gets emotional
The former Australian wicketkeeper-batter thanked the doctors, hospital staff, his wife Leontina and the person who performed CPR when he suffered from cardiac arrest.
"I want to take this opportunity to thank the amazing doctors and nurses at the Royal Stoke Hospital critical care unit for their incredible professionalism, kindness and compassion. I also want to thank Beci Bassett, a parent at the adventure playground in Cheshire who immediately administered CPR. Her courage and quick intervention quite simply saved my life," he said.
"My wife Leontina was at my bedside hour after hour and kept our families informed of my progress. She dealt bravely with every development thrown her way. LT, I thank you and love you.
"LT was joined early on by my great mate Simon Millington, who flew out from Nevada to be there for her and her family and assisted them throughout the ordeal. For this I will be eternally grateful.
"Finally, I want to say a big thank you to all my well-wishers from around the world. The amount of messages of love and support my family and I received was extremely humbling."
Back to work soon
Campbell is expected to re-join the Netherlands squad as they face West Indies later this month in a three-ODI series against West Indies which will be played from May 31 to June 4, right after the completion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.
The Perth-born cricketer was appointed as Netherlands' head coach in January 2017. Campbell is among few Australian cricketers who have represented two countries at international level. Before taking the top job in the Dutch dressing room, he became the oldest player to make his T20I debut when he played in T20 World Cup 2016. He was 44 years and 30 days old at that time.
