Chetan Sharma has been shortlisted as one of the candidates for the new selection committee, a source confirmed to Sports Tak. Along with ex-selection committee member former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad is one of the shortlisted candidates as well.

The source also revealed that the shortlisting of candidates is still underway and there is a high chance that few more prominent names will emerge on the list. The interview date for the candidates is yet to be finalised but it is most likely to take place on December 27.

“We have a huge list and there are so many things in motion. Once the shortlisting of candidates is done we will share it with CAC and they will interview them by the end of this month. A new selection committee will be in place before the announcement of India's squad for limited-overs series against Sri Lanka at home,” the source said.

Earlier, former Indian pacer was sacked from the selection committee after Rohit Sharma-led India’s ouster from T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia with an embarrassing defeat against England in the semi-final. The decision was taken at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on November 18.

During the 56-year-old’s tenure, India had also failed to reach the knockout stage in the 2021 edition of T20 World Cup and lost the World Test Championships final under Virat Kohli’s leadership.

Chetan (North zone), Harvinder Singh (Central Zone), Sunil Joshi (South Zone) and Debasis Mohanty (East Zone) have had the shortest stint as senior national selectors in recent times. Some of them were appointed in 2020 and some in 2021.

A senior national selector normally gets a four-year term subject to extension. There was no selector from West Zone after Abbey Kuruvilla’s tenure ended.

Earlier former left-arm spinner Maninder Singh and opener Shiv Sunder Das had emerged as two prominent names who have applied for senior national selectors' posts.
