West Indies found it tough to negotiate with the Indian bowlers in the first ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as they were bowled out for just 176 in 43.5 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal, playing in his 60th ODI for the Indian team was firing on all cylinders to break the Caribbean team's back. Kieron Pollard, skipper of the visiting side was dismissed for a golden duck by Chahal and in the process wrote an unwanted record to his name. Pollard has now been dismissed for a duck on 15 occasions, one more than legendary Brain Lara in the ODI format.
Pollard, who came into bat in the 20th over after Nicholas Pooran (18) was dismissed, failed to pick the googly from Chahal and got bowled for a duck as he attempted an expansive cover drive. West Indies were reduced to 71/5 and lost two more wickets in short intervals. He now ranks second on the unwanted list, with only Chris Gayle being dismissed more times on a duck with 24.
Pollard's dismissal also meant that Chahal was on a hat-trick, which could have been another milestone for him, having reached a century of ODI wickets. However, Jason Holder comfortably negotiated the hat-trick delivery despite an attacking field in place.
Apart from Gayle and Lara, he is joined by Phil Simmons and Dwayne Smith, both on 14 ducks each in the ODI format. Pollard has not been in good form of late as he registered single-digit scores in last two appearances in the format.
Earlier Pooran became Chahal's 100th victim in the 50-over format, becoming the second-fastest Indian spinner after Kuldeep Yadav to reach the accolade. Chahal went on to pick four wickets from his 9.5 overs while conceding 49 runs. West Indies batters struggled against Indian spinners. Off-spinner Washington Sundar took three wickets in his comeback match. Sundar bowled in the powerplay overs and got rid of opener Brandon King and Darren Bravo. Later, he returned to break the eighth-wicket partnership and get rid of Fabian Allen.
