Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been impressed by the athleticism of players in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL). There have been few spectacular catches that have made headlines. For India, young Jemimah Rodrigues has showed exemplary levels of athleticism and pulled off excellent catches diving forward. Overseas players including Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Ellyse Perry have been magnificent in the field as well stopping crucial boundaries.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2023, Tendulkar said that it is crucial to support women cricketers. The 49-year-old feels that the tournament has been a huge success so far.

"It (WPL) is a great initiative. The first innings was played well by the BCCI. Now in the second innings we all have to support women cricketers," said Tendulkar at the Conclave.

"They are doing a magnificent job. I am really impressed by fielding standards. Their athleticism has just blown my mind. It is incredible, it is fast, exciting and good cricket should always be encouraged. They are fiercely competitive and I know how IPL is played.

"This (WPL) is just the beginning. Every day starts with some expectations and when you go back home you have some experience. So, this is a beginning and I am sure it is going to leave us with some great experiences, not just for India but across world.”

Tendulkar who played for Mumbai Indians (MI) as there is happy with the WPL has progressed. Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai-based franchise has continued their unbeaten run in the tournament. MI have qualified for the next stage already with five consecutive wins.

Harmanpreet has been in superb form with the bat as well. The 34-year-old has scored 180 runs from five innings at an average of 90 including three half-centuries. Harmanpreet has hit the most number of half-centuries in the tournament so far.
