In a highly anticipated return to the Premier League, William Saliba showcased his defensive prowess in Arsenal's victory against Nottingham Forest. Saliba, the talented French defender, had been sidelined in the latter part of the previous season due to a back injury. This setback was a blow to the Gunners, who experienced a decline from their premier position, eventually finishing five points adrift of champions Manchester City. Prior to his injury, Saliba had established a commanding defensive duo with Gabriel Magalhaes.
In the latest face-off, Arsenal emerged victorious with a 2-1 score against Forest. Saliba was instrumental, setting up Bukayo Saka for an exceptional goal, following Eddie Nketiah's initial score.
An elated Saliba remarked, “I’m really, really happy.” Sharing his journey to recovery, he noted, “I’m not 100 per cent at the moment, but I give everything to come back, because it’s been a long time. I didn’t play as I was injured, and I’m so happy to be with the team. The team and the staff helped me to get better and get back to my best.” Reflecting on playing at home, he added, “It’s always better (to play at home). You don’t feel pressure, you don’t feel any pain, it’s good.”
Arsenal seemed to dominate the match, but Forest's substitute, Taiwo Awoniyi, struck a late goal, reviving hopes for a potential draw. However, Arsenal managed to preserve their lead. A satisfied Saliba said, “It was really good to start the season with a win.” Commenting on the match's close finish, he observed, “Unfortunately, we conceded a goal in the last 10 minutes, but it’s okay, we learn and will improve for the next game.”
Nottingham Forest debuted three players: Ola Aina, Anthony Elanga, and notably, Matt Turner, who recently transitioned from Arsenal. Reflecting on the match, Turner expressed on Instagram, “Debut and Prem debut. A dream was finally realised yesterday.” Expressing gratitude, he continued, “Thank you to the Forest fans who made the trip! See you at the City Ground on Friday. Also just wanted to say thanks for the warm welcome back to the Emirates, it was truly a special day for me and my family.”
