In their first home game since clinching the treble, Manchester City secured a gritty 1-0 victory against Newcastle, thanks to a brilliant first-half goal by Julian Alvarez. The World Cup champion showcased his precision at the 31-minute mark with a mesmerizing curl into the top corner at the Etihad Stadium. This singular effort cemented the reigning champions' claim to all three Premier League points.

Newcastle, who had demolished Aston Villa with a 5-1 score in their season opener, came with aspirations of securing their first league triumph at City in nearly 23 years. However, the formidable host team, with only two rotations post their strenuous European Super Cup clash in Athens, managed to stifle Eddie Howe's squad efficiently.

Although Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola's leadership, weren't at their signature fluid play, they demonstrated a commendable professional approach. With the effulgent Alvarez and Phil Foden on the field, they outshone their adversaries.

The visitors, Newcastle, persisted with their zeal till the last whistle, but the evening wrapped up in dissatisfaction for them, culminating in bookings for five of their players.

A sluggish beginning by City gradually morphed into mounting pressure during the first half. The initial spark was ignited by Manuel Akanji's long-range shot sailing over the goal. Despite Alvarez's attempt with a crisp cross missing its mark with Erling Haaland, the combined ventures of Mateo Kovacic and Foden soon came into play.

Phil Foden, stepping up in the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne, was pivotal in Alvarez's goal. After creating an opportunity, Alvarez's Argentine magic materialized in the form of a scorching shot that outclassed Nick Pope.

Though Foden appeared poised to dominate the remainder of the match, Newcastle, sensing City's hesitance to finalize their dominance, tried to retaliate towards the end. Opportunities presented themselves to Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron, but City's defense, combined with their counter-attacking prowess, kept Newcastle at bay.

While late attempts by Foden and Rodri to facilitate Haaland's sealing goal remained unrealized, Alvarez's splendid early goal proved to be the game-changer. The evening ended with Manchester City proudly showcasing their previous season's achievements and rejoicing in another triumph.
