According to a report in a leading sports portal The Athletic, the gulf between Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United has widened profoundly after the club suffered an embarrassing 0-4 defeat against Brentford at the weekend. The Red Devils, who have crashed to rock bottom and are tottering at the last place in the Premier League standings after tasting two defeats in as many fixtures this season, are now in a precarious position when it comes to Ronaldo's situation.
Multiple reports have claimed that the discontent Portuguese talisman has sought a transfer from the club as he wants to compete in the Champions League. But his wishes haven't been granted so far as there aren't many clubs who have made an offer.
"The Athletic has been told of days when he eats lunch alone in the canteen at Carrington, and he has been seen flapping his arms about in training and attempting to argue against the high-pressing approach favoured by the new manager," reported the Athletic.
As the clock trickles down and just two weeks remain in the summer transfer window, the most successful club in Premier League history is grappling to address several issues pertaining to its squad.
According to a report in The Times, the Red Devils' manager Erik ten Hag is open to letting Ronaldo leave during the transfer window.
Meanwhile, club legend Gary Neville has expressed his fears that the club could finish in the bottom half of the table if Ronaldo leaves.
"The problem they have now is if they lose him, there's nothing left in terms of the goalscoring part of the pitch and I genuinely think if they don't bring players in or if they bring in poor players and he leaves, I genuinely think they can finish in the bottom half of the table," Neville said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.
Ronaldo was United's highest goal-scorer last season as he netted 24 times across all competition.
