World's richest person, Elon Musk in a sensational tweet on Tuesday (August 16) announced that he is buying English football club, Manchester United which left the Internet buzzing.
"To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party," the Tesla owner tweeted. And shortly after this tweet, he said, "Also, I'm buying Manchester United ur welcome."
Musk was replying to his tweet that said, “To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!”
Musk is a frequent Twitter user who has a history of trolling the media and making jokes about them. The media pays great attention to what he says.
While it was not immediately clear whether the billionaire investor was serious about pursuing a deal, his tweet took the internet by storm.
Musk has a history of making irreverent tweets, and he later clarified the post by saying he was not buying sports teams.
Abuzz by the tweet saga, one of the Twitter handles ‘Tesla Owners Silicon Valley’ tweeted, “Are you serious”, to which Musk replied by saying," No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams".
Some Manchester United fans, disgruntled by their club’s declining fortunes of late, had previously urged Musk on Twitter to consider buying the club.
In recent years, Manchester United fans have protested against the Glazers, who bought the club for 790 million pounds ($955.51 million) in 2005.
As of Tuesday, Manchester United had a market capitalization of $2.08 billion.
United won its last Premier League title under legendary coach Alex Ferguson in the 2012-13 season, and has since fallen behind crosstown rival Manchester City, which has won four of the past five titles.
Wantaway star striker Cristiano Ronaldo will be allowed to leave United this summer if he can find a club to buy him, the Telegraph reported.
United haven't won the English league title since the days of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed the last of their record 20 wins in 2013, despite the efforts of a cast of eight permanent and temporary coaches since then.
