Manchester United has opted to postpone the announcement concerning Mason Greenwood’s future with the club until after their upcoming season begins. Greenwood, 21, has been in suspension since January 30, 2022, following allegations stemming from online content involving a young woman.
Though the forward was facing serious charges such as attempted rape and assault, the Crown Prosecution Service declared half a year ago that they would not be pursuing the case further.
Throughout this period, Manchester United has maintained Greenwood's suspension. It was earlier believed that the club would reveal the findings of their internal probe before commencing their season. However, ahead of their Premier League encounter with Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday, sources suggest that no such announcement will be made.
United's decision to delay the announcement comes as they transition into a consultation phase following their investigation. The club is keen on directly interacting with principal stakeholders, elucidating their decision-making process, and seeking input.
Prominent stakeholders in this context include the club's partners and fans, and also members of the Manchester United women’s team. Notably, several women's team players are currently participating in the World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Tensions around Greenwood's prospective return are palpable. A section of Manchester United fans declared their intent on Friday to stage a protest ahead of the Wolves match at Old Trafford, expressing their reservations about Greenwood rejoining the squad.
Greenwood, a product of Manchester United's esteemed academy, boasts an impressive record of 35 goals in 129 matches for the club. His last match appearance dates back to January 22, 2022.
