In a pivotal development, Manchester United announced on Monday that Mason Greenwood, their 21-year-old England forward, will be parting ways with the club. This decision comes in the wake of a criminal investigation regarding allegations of attempted rape, which was concluded by prosecutors six months prior. Greenwood has been off the field for United since January 2022, and the course of his career at the club has been uncertain amid internal investigations.
The club conveyed, “All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United." The statement further elaborated that both parties mutually agreed upon the decision. It was deemed best for Greenwood to continue his football journey elsewhere, ensuring that his presence doesn’t serve as a distraction at Old Trafford. In line with this decision, the club expressed its intention to support Greenwood during this transition.
Echoing the club’s sentiments, Greenwood stated it was “the best decision for us all … to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club.” The forward came under scrutiny following accusations related to controlling and coercive behavior and assault towards a young woman. These allegations surfaced after certain images and videos began circulating online.
Although the prosecutors in England concluded their case in February, Manchester United proceeded with its own internal investigation. Emphasizing their thorough approach, United mentioned, “Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club's standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible.”
While Greenwood vehemently denied the accusations against him, he acknowledged some lapses in judgment, stating, “I did not do the things I was accused of.” He further reflected on his personal growth, expressing his commitment to learn from his past errors. Greenwood emphasized his aspirations to emerge not just as a better footballer but also as a responsible father and individual, leveraging his talents constructively both on and off the field.
