Indian Super League (ISL) match number 53 that was slated to take place between ATK Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC on Saturday (January 8), in Fatorda has been postponed after one ATK Mohun Bagan footballer was tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

"Indian Super League (ISL) has decided to postpone Match No. 53 between ATK Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC scheduled to be played today, Saturday, January 8, 2022, at PJN Stadium in Fatorda.

"The decision has been taken in consultation with the League's medical team after an ATK Mohun Bagan player tested positive for COVID-19," the league said in an official statement.

The league is expected to find and reschedule the fixture to a later date.

The ISL is taking place behind closed doors in Goa and three stadiums have been holding the matches.

ATK Mohun Bagan desperate for three points

ATK Mohun Bagan under the guidance of their new coach Juan Ferrando are currently sitting at fourth position in the standings. The Kolkata giants have bagged 15 points from 9 matches.

Odisha FC, on the other hand, are two points behind ATKMB and standing at seventh position, with four victories and one draw out of their 9 matches.

In their last game ATKMB conceded an injury time-goal to secure just a point (2-2) against Hyderabad FC. Odisha FC on the other hand secured a terrific victory after beating the defending champions Mumbai City FC (4-2) in their last fixture.

I-League suspended

Recently, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had to suspend the I-League for at least six months after the virus had cause a mayhem and the teams participating in Kolkata found it terribly difficult to continue with the matches.

On the other hand, cricket tournaments in India have been no exception. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently had to postpone the Ranji Trophy, Senior Women’s T20 League and the Col CK Nayudu Trophy as well.

The deadly Covid-19 virus has already wreaked a huge havoc globally and the sports fraternity has been no exception from that aspect. From the English Premier League (EPL) to the Big Bash League (BBL), multiple major global tournaments have been jolted due to the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases.
