Durand Cup 2023: Gokulam nick past Blasters 4-3 to win Kerala Derby

In an exhilarating face-off that saw the net ripple seven times, Gokulam Kerala FC secured a narrow 4-3 win over Kerala Blasters during their Durand Cup group league match. Sunday's high-octane game ensured Gokulam's dominance, sealing their position atop the group with their second consecutive victory.

Goals for Gokulam Kerala came from Bouba Aminou (17th min), Sreekuttan (43rd min), Alex Sanchez (45+1 min), and Abhijith K (47th min). On the other side, the Blasters witnessed Emmanuel Justine (34th min), Prabir Das (54th minute), and Adrian Luna (77th minute) registering their names on the scoresheet.

Despite this being the Indian Super League (ISL) side Kerala Blasters' inaugural group game, their spirited performance exhibited determination. Now, the onus rests upon them to clinch victories in their upcoming two matches to remain in contention.

Gokulam's surge began when Basit Bhat's effort took a deflection off a Blasters' defender. This paved the way for Nili Perdomo's exquisite delivery, allowing Cameroonian skipper Bouba Aminou to capitalize and score with a well-timed header. The Blasters retaliated swiftly, as young Nigerian striker Emmanuel Justine skillfully directed a header into the net.

Gokulam's rhythm was further accentuated when Alex Sanchez found the back of the net, thanks to an assist from Perdomo. The electrifying first half concluded with another Gokulam goal, as Alex capitalized on a lapse in Blasters' defense.

Post-break, the relentless pace persisted. A mere two minutes into the second half witnessed Gokulam amplifying their lead with Abhijith K's rocket shot, accentuated by Alex's superb assist.

However, the Blasters refused to relent. Prabir, capitalizing on Md. Aimen's excellent groundwork, narrowed the goal difference. Further intensifying the drama, Adrian Luna seized the opportunity to score following an impressive play by Bidhyasagar Singh.

Despite the Blasters' vigorous final push in the closing moments, the day undeniably belonged to Gokulam Kerala. Their triumphant 4-3 win in this derby encounter not only granted them the much-desired three points but also set a benchmark for footballing excellence in the Durand Cup.
