In the high-octane Group E fixture of the ongoing Durand Cup 2023, Chennaiyin FC registered a commendable 2-1 victory against Delhi FC. The action-packed match unfolded at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Friday, marking Chennaiyin FC's third consecutive win in the tournament.
Chennaiyin FC showcased exemplary performance throughout the group stages, concluding their group matches undefeated. They amassed a total of nine points from three games, positioning them as a formidable contender as they advance to the quarterfinals with heightened confidence.
Contrastingly, Delhi FC's journey in the group stages was less stellar, ending with just two points from three matches. Their tally came from two draws, one each against Hyderabad FC and Tribhuvan Army FC.
Rafael Crivellaro and Vincy Barretto netted goals for Chennaiyin FC, sealing their win. Delhi FC's solitary goal came from the prowess of Pape Alassane Gassame.
Chennaiyin FC's strategy witnessed a significant shift, with Head Coach Owen Coyle introducing seven new players from the lineup that previously squared off against Tribhuvan Army FC. However, the core team's spine remained unchanged with the likes of defenders Ankit Mukherjee, Aakash Sangwan, Bikash Yumnam, and Captain Jordan Murray retaining their spots.
On the Delhi side, Coach Israil Gurung initiated five changes, giving starting berths to overseas players Sergio Barboza and Gassame.
Aiming for a win to bolster their knockout stage aspirations, Delhi FC initiated an aggressive offensive against Chennaiyin. Despite penetrating the defense, they struggled to capitalize on the opportunities presented.
Chennaiyin FC, however, displayed clinical precision. Their breakthrough came in the first half when Crivellaro, aided by Sangwan, deftly maneuvered past three Delhi FC defenders to slot the ball past the goalkeeper.
The momentum continued in the second half as Barretto doubled Chennaiyin's lead in the 51st minute. Sachu Siby's impressive run paved the way for Barretto's decisive strike.
Delhi FC retaliated promptly with Gasaame’s free-kick finding the net, reducing the goal deficit. However, despite several opportunities that followed, Chennaiyin FC couldn't extend their lead, wrapping up the match with a 2-1 scoreline.
