The reigning champions of the Indian Super League, Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG), showcased their footballing prowess with a decisive 3-1 victory over Mumbai City FC in the Durand Cup's fourth quarterfinal on Sunday. While Jason Cummings, Manvir Singh, and Anwar Ali netted for MBSG, Jorge Pereyra Diaz managed to score the only goal for Mumbai City. The triumphant Mohung Bagan force is now set to face FC Goa in the semifinals scheduled for Thursday.

Des Buckingham, the head coach for Mumbai City, fielded a formidable XI, spotlighting Diaz, Bipin Singh, and Lallianzuala Chhangte spearheading the offense. Their defense featured Rahul Bheke, Mehtab Singh, Akash Mishra, and Yoell Van Nieff. In contrast, Mohun Bagan countered with a defense led by Hector Yuste, Ali, and Subhasish Bose. Their offensive charge was helmed by Armando Sadiku and Cummings.

With both teams boasting stellar midfield line-ups, their initial gameplay saw them neutralizing each other's offensive advances, making goal opportunities scarce. However, MBSG drew first blood in the ninth minute when Cummings successfully converted a penalty won by Ashique Kuruniyan.

Although Mumbai City quickly retaliated with Diaz leveling the score in the 28th minute, MBSG regained their lead merely two minutes later. Manvir's stellar header off Hugo Boumous's cross ensured the Mariners had the upper hand going into half time.

In an attempt to rejuvenate Mumbai City's attack, Buckingham introduced Vikram Partap Singh post the interval. Despite Mumbai's aggressive play, it was MBSG who capitalized on their chances, with Anwar Ali expanding their lead in the 63rd minute. Kuruniyan demonstrated impeccable skills, weaving past opponents to serve the perfect ball for Ali, who sealed the deal with a powerful header.

MBSG's solid defensive performance thwarted any comeback attempts by the Islanders, ensuring their spot in the Durand Cup semifinals. This victory underscores MBSG's reputation as a formidable force in Indian football and sets up an enticing clash with FC Goa in the next round.
