FIFA Women's World Cup round-up: Goals galore sees 11 goals score; big wins for Brazil, Germany on historic day

SportsTak

It was a day of goals — and also history —in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after Brazil, Germany and Italy secured their first wins in the competition. It was a big day for the Arab nations after Morocco became the first country from the region to play in a FIFA Women's World Cup, but the moment was marred by their 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Germany. On that note, we take a look at the results of the day.

Italy 1-0 Argentina

A solitary goal from Cristiana Girelli's goal in the 87th minute gave Italy the perfect start to their Women's World Cup 2023 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Argentina on Monday night. They had two goals disallowed before the veteran found the net with a pinpoint header. The striker had come into the match as a substitute in the 83rd minute before giving his team the victory.

Morocco 6-0 Germany

Alexandra Popp scored twice in the first half while her team Germany added four more in the second 45 minutes to hand Arab debutants Moroccoa a 6-0 defeat on Monday. This has been the biggest victory of the tournament so far, with the two-time champion against a Moroccan team on debut at the tournament. Popp scored her 63rd and 64th international goals, moving to third on Germany's all-time list.

Brazil 4-0 Panama

Ary Borges scored a hat-trick as Brazil shone brightly in their FIFA Women's World Cup opening game on Monday with a 4-0 victory over Panama. Borges struck twice in the first half at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, scoring her three goals in a space of 70 minutes.

The final strike came from Bia Zaneratto as Brazil made an early statement by moving to the top of Group F. Panama, making their debut in the tournament, could do little to keep the 2007 runner-up at bay, with Borges ruthless in front of goal.

It was also a momentous occasion for Brazil legend Marta, who was a second-half substitute. The 37-year-old forward is the competition's all-time leading scorer with 17 goals.
