This year’s summer transfer market was all about surprises. Some unexpected transfers to homecoming of players, this summer was too busy for the football clubs. Legendary players like Lionel Messi left Barcelona with a heavy heart and joined French giants Paris Saint Germain while the Juventus star forward Cristiano Ronaldo joined his former club Manchester United. Amid all these transfers there was one transfer on which every football fan and expert was keeping a close watch, the 22-year-old Kylian Mbappe. There was a 99.9% possibility that Mbappe would leave PSG and will join the Spanish club Real Madrid. However, the transfer couldn’t happen as PSG refused the proposal made by Real Madrid on the very last day of the transfer deadline. Now, nearly after a month, Mbappe himself has opened on the whole saga of his failed move to the Spanish club.
Mbappe highlights the whole saga
As per reports from football journalist Fabrizio Romano, while talking to French newspaper L’ Equipe, Mbappe said, “I asked to leave in July, yes - but it’s not true that I’ve turned down 7 contract extension proposals… Paris Saint-Germain has given me a lot. I have always been happy in the four years I spent here, and I still am. I wanted something respectful between me and PSG: I said, if you don't want me to leave, I'll stay”.
When asked about his new contract renewal with PSG, he said, “I stayed at PSG and I’m really happy […]. But we’re far from signing a new contract and staying, as I wanted to leave this summer. With regard to my situation, we haven’t been discussing a renewal for two months, since I said I wanted to leave. And also, future is not my priority now,”
Wanted to leave before the EURO’s
“Before the Euros, I told Paris Saint-Germain that I didn’t want to renew, and after the Euros I said I wanted to leave. My ambition was for everyone to move forward hand in hand, the selling club, the buying club and me. But they [PSG] said no and wanted me to stay,” Mbappe explained.
“I wanted to leave PSG. When I say leave, I’m talking about Real Madrid. Real made an offer. I thought that my time at PSG was over. Leaving was the logical next step”, he added.
Real Madrid made hard attempts for Mbappe
This summer transfer window, it was very well clear that Real Madrid’s prime target was PSG’s 22-year-old star Mbappe. They even gathered funds by letting off some of their big players. Real Madrid offered three proposals to PSG to sign Mbappe but PSG refused all the three offers. Even on the last day, Real Madrid placed an improved offer to PSG but it all went in vain. In the end, Real Madrid pulled out from signing Mbappe and instead went on to sign Eduardo Camavinga. Come next year, Real will again go for Mbappe but this time they may sign him for free as his contract with PSG will expire next year thus making him a free agent.
