24-year-old South African football player Luke Fleurs died after being shot during an unfortunate 'hijacking incident in Johannesburg, on Wednesday. Luke was shot while waiting at a petrol station in the Honeydew suburb, according to the police.
As per the police, the attackers later fled in Luke's car. The young defender was taken to the hospital where he was later declared dead.
"We are profoundly shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely passing of one of our players, Luke Fleurs. The club’s management, players, and the technical team are all profoundly upset by this devastating turn of events. We convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time. The club will make further announcements at a later stage," Kaizer Chiefs said on Thursday morning.
South Africa Sports Minister Expresses His Condolences
South Africa Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa was extremely saddened by the incident and expressed his condolences to Luke Fleurs and his family during this hard time.
“I am saddened by the passing of KaizerChiefs defender and former junior international Luke Fleurs. I am saddened that yet another life has been cut short due to violent crime. My thoughts are with the Fleurs and Amakhosi family, and the entire South African football fraternity," said South African Sports Minister
Luke Fleurs' young career
Fleurs joined Kaizer Chiefs back in October 2023 following his runs with Ubuntu and SuperSport United. The defender was unable to make an appearance for the senior side. However, he was with side twice as an unused substitute.
The rising star also received his maiden call-up into the national South Africa team back in 2021 but he could never make an international appearance for the senior side. He also made three appearances for South Africa's under-23 side during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
