NASCAR's historic move, will hold first race outside USA in neighbouring country after 67 years

NASCAR will host the Cup Series race in Mexico in 2025.

The last time a Cup Series race was held outside the US was back in 1958.

For the first time in modern NASCAR history, the Cup Series will compete internationally, in Mexico. The NASCAR Xfinity Series will likewise have a companion race in the city. NASCAR will hold its very first-ever points-scoring Cup Series race beyond the US on June 15, 2025. On June 14, 2025, the Xfinity Series race will take place. The races will be held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. Prime Video will livestream the Cup Series race, and The CW will broadcast the Xfinity Series race.

 

NASCAR has been attempting to grow globally. In the past, the Cup Series has held events in Canada and Japan. The Mexico City track, famous for its Formula 1 races, will now host a NASCAR race. The length of the racetrack is 2.674 miles (4.303 km). NASCAR will band together with OCESA, a significant entertainment promoter in Mexico that likewise runs the Mexico City Great Prix for Formula 1.
 

“We brought the Craftsman Truck Series to Canada for a number of years, we’ve had the Xfinity Series in Mexico. This is a monumental moment for our sport in the sense that this is our first step of really taking the Cup Series internationally, and I think it could set us up for the future in potential new markets. So, it’s going to be a big project for us. There’s a lot of questions that we have. I’m sure that the industry will have some questions as well, but excited to take this on,” said NASCAR’s executive vice president, Ben Kennedy.

The last time a Cup Series race was held outside the US was back in 1958, in Toronto. As per the Athletic, the Mexico City race will take the place of a race at Richmond. Since 1959, the 0.75-mile Richmond track has hosted two races per season.

 

Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez track in Mexico

 

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez track in Mexico is the place where the annual edition of FI Mexican GP takes place. It was first built in 1959, rebuilt in 2015, and tributes racing drivers Ricardo Rodríguez and Pedro Rodríguez. From 2005 to 2008, Hermanos Rodrguez hosted four Xfinity Series races. The NASCAR Mexico Series is another regional championship that NASCAR runs in Mexico. Current Cup Series drivers like Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Busch have additionally come out on top in races there.

 

The road course of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodrguez will host the Cup Series race. Instead of using the shorter layout that Formula E uses, the race intends to use the full 2.7-mile layout. The remaining schedule for the 2025 Cup Series will be announced in the future.
