Indian rowing showcased impressive performances at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, as two duos from the country stormed into the finals of their respective categories on Thursday, September 21. The rowing community and fans back home have high expectations as India inches closer to potential medal finishes.
In the Men's Lightweight Double Sculls category, Arjun Jat Lal and Arvind Singh, who have been in the spotlight since their commendable performance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, once again proved their mettle. They finished an impressive second in Heat 1, thus qualifying for the Repechage A round. Their finishing time stood at 6:27.45s, trailing only the Chinese pair of Fan Junjie and Sun Man, who clocked an exceptional 6:14.97s.
The decisive Repechage A saw the Indian duo up their game as they finished first, recording a time of 6:55.78s, ensuring their spot in the Final A. Their main competitors in this round, the Japanese team, finished the round in 7:05.91s, also earning their place in the final. The high-octane final clash is set for Sunday, September 24, where Arjun and Arvind will aim to bring glory to India.
Parallelly, in the Men's Double Sculls event, India's Satnam Singh and Parminder Singh showcased their skill and determination. They recorded a time of 6:48.06s in the Repechage A, finishing at the top and securing their berth for the final. They had a tight competition with Iraq, who followed closely with a timing of 6:51.90s. Teams from Hong Kong, China, Sri Lanka, and Kuwait, will compete in the Final B - a category that doesn't hold the promise of medals.
Earlier, in the heats, Satnam and Parminder had given a glimpse of their form, finishing second with a timing of 6:27.01s. The Chinese duo led the charts in the heats with a record timing of 6:22.76s. Just like their counterparts in the lightweight category, Satnam and Parminder will also compete in the final on Sunday, September 24.
