India's Ramita Jindal achieved what her coach Suma Shirur did in Athens 2004 as she qualified for the medal round of the women's 10m Air Rifle on July 28. Ramita became the second female shooter in the last two decades after Manu Bhaker to advance to the medal round.
Ramita was 22nd after the Series 1. She made a giant leap after the Series 2 after collecting 106 points. She was underwhelming in Series 3 with 104.9 points. She made minor gain after the fifth series rising to ninth position. In the end, Ramita had a tally of 631.5 points and claimed the fifth spot in the qualification round to qualify for the medal round.
Valarivan dips after good start
The other Indian in the women's 10m air rifle event was Elavenil Valarivan. The former junior World Champion started with 105.8 points in the Series 1. In Series 2, she racked up 106.1 points. She jumped to the second position. But she slipped after Series 3 with 104.4 points.
After Series 5, she was placed sixth and looked set for qualification but her last two shots in Series 6 knocked her out of the medal round race. Her last two shots 9.8 and 10.3 led to him slipping to 10th position. She finished the qualification round with 630.7 points.
When Ramita broke world record
Earlier, in the Olympic Selection Trials in New Delhi and Bhopal, Ramita scored 636.4 points. She broke the world record by just 0.1 points. However, her record was broken by South Korea's Ban Hyojin. She set the Qualification Olympic Record with a score of 634.5. The previous QOR record belonged to Norway's Jeanette Hegg at the Tokyo Games.
