Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the women's 50 kg freestyle event Final at the Paris Olympics 2024 for being overweight by a mere 100 grams has been hospitalized. Vinesh was exercising the whole night without rest, eating, and drinking in an effort to make the sanctioned weight limit which resulted in severe dehydration and affected her health badly. Hours after grappler Vinesh Phogat gave every Indian hope for another medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, she was disqualified from the gold medal match.
Vinesh's valiant effort to make weight
As per the sources, Vinesh weighed approximately 100 grams more than the allowed limit. According to the rules of the competition, she won't even get the silver medal in spite of sealing her spot in the Final. She would not be making it to the podium and instead, her opponent from the semi-final has been promoted to the Final. Following an astonishing win against Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman, she found herself over the weight limit by approximately 2kgs on August 6 night and to make her weight, the Indian wrestler, jogged and cycled all night but unfortunately still could not meet the criteria.
"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand,” the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said in a statement.
