India's men's hockey team commenced their Asian Games campaign in spectacular fashion, decimating Uzbekistan 16-0 in a scintillating Pool A match on Sunday. As the world's third-ranked team, India was always expected to have the upper hand against 66th ranked Uzbekistan. True to form, they dominated every aspect of the game, leaving no room for the Uzbeks to breathe.
Lalit Upadhyay and Varun Kumar emerged as the standout performers, netting four goals apiece (Lalit: 7th, 24th, 37th, 53rd minutes; Varun: 12th, 36th, 50th, 52nd minutes). Mandeep Singh wasn’t far behind, contributing a hat-trick (18th, 27th, 28th minutes). Abhishek, Amit Rohidas, Sukhjeet, Shamsher Singh, and Sanjay also got onto the scoresheet, showcasing India’s overwhelming offensive prowess.
The Indian captain, Harmanpreet Singh, was absent from the match, having had the honor of being the joint flag-bearer at the Asian Games opening ceremony alongside Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain.
Uzbekistan's defense faced relentless pressure from the onset. India's forward-line combined seamlessly with the midfield, resulting in a torrent of goals. While the team secured an impressive 14 penalty corners during the match, only five were converted—a potential area of improvement noted by chief coach Craig Fulton.
Uzbekistan's goalkeeper, Davlat Tolibbaev, made some commendable saves against India's fiery offense. However, the barrage of attacks proved too much, and the floodgates opened with Lalit's rebound goal, closely followed by Varun's penalty corner conversion.
Mandeep Singh's exceptional dribbling and playmaking skills stood out, as he not only scored but also set up crucial goals, including a splendid assist for Abhishek's goal.
The halftime scoreboard read 7-0 in India's favor, and the narrative didn't change in the second half. The Indian defense, including goalkeepers PR Sreejesh and Krishan Bahadur Pathak, had a relaxed day, as the game predominantly unfolded in Uzbekistan's half.
The onslaught intensified in the last two quarters, with India adding nine more goals to their tally, reinforcing their supremacy.
Up next, India will take on Singapore in another anticipated pool match on Tuesday. This commanding win sets a strong tone for their journey ahead in the Asian Games 2023.
