Asian Games 2023: Indian men's hockey team's sheer dominance continues as they make it 32 goals in 2 matches after beating Singapore 16-1

Story Highlights:

Singapore had the unenviable task of trying to stymie an Indian side that was in relentless form.

In an emphatic display of skill and strategy, India's men's hockey team, spearheaded by Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh, crushed Singapore with a resounding 16-1 victory during Tuesday's match at the Asian Games. Both stars achieved commendable hat-tricks, and their performance underscores India's formidable prowess in the sport, as this win follows on the heels of their recent 16-0 demolition of Uzbekistan.

Singapore, ranked 49th in the world, had the unenviable task of trying to stymie an Indian side that was in relentless form. The players contributing to the spectacular scoreboard included Harmanpreet (scoring in the 24th, 39th, 40th, and 42nd minutes), Mandeep (12th, 30th, 51st), Abhishek (51st, 52nd), and Varun Kumar (twice in the 55th minute). Other notable goal-scorers for India were Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Gurjant Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Manpreet Singh, and Shamsher Singh.

The game began with India holding the upper hand, though they appeared somewhat reserved in their approach. Nonetheless, the team's control was unmistakable, orchestrating the majority of play within Singapore's half. Singapore’s goalkeeper, Sandran Gugan, rose to the occasion in the initial minutes, thwarting several Indian attempts to score, especially from penalty corners. It wasn't until the 12th minute that Mandeep Singh seized an opportunity, skillfully directing an impeccable pass from Gurjant Singh into the net, thereby breaking the deadlock.

India's momentum surged post the first quarter. With a barrage of attacks, deft dribbles, and precise passes, they added a flurry of five goals in quick succession. The second quarter witnessed a transformation in India's gameplay, with the team exhibiting a combination of finesse and aggression.

However, it wasn't just about the onslaught. Harmanpreet's conversion of India’s first penalty corner to take the score to 5-0 highlighted the team's adaptability and persistence. Singapore, amidst the Indian wave, managed to find a brief moment of success with Zaki Zulkarnain scoring a consolation goal in the 53rd minute. But the celebration was short-lived as India continued its goal parade.

The match concluded with a final touch from Varun Kumar, who converted two penalty corners, encapsulating India's dominance. However, the team's overall conversion rate from penalty corners (eight successful attempts out of 22) indicates areas they can fine-tune.

Looking ahead, India will lock horns with defending champions, Japan, on Thursday. If their current form is anything to go by, it promises to be a tantalizing encounter.

To sum it up, this victory at the Asian Games isn't just a testament to India's hockey legacy but also a bold statement to competitors about their championship intentions.
