On the third day of the Asian Games, India's burgeoning sailor, Neha Thakur, has ensured the nation's presence on the medal tally by securing a silver in the girls' dinghy ILCA-4 sailing event. This impressive feat marked the beginning of India's medal collection in the sport at this year's Games.
Hailing from the renowned National Sailing School in Bhopal, Neha showcased exceptional skills and determination. With an accumulated total of 32 points, her final net score was 27 after deducting her lowest race score, propelling her to the coveted second spot. She was closely trailed by the gold medallist from Thailand, Noppassorn Khunboonjan. Completing the podium, Kiera Marie Carlyle from Singapore clinched the bronze with a net score of just one point more than Neha, at 28.
For those unfamiliar with the sport's scoring mechanism, in sailing, the athlete's least favorable score from the series of races is excluded from their overall tally, determining their net score. Ultimately, the sailor with the smallest net score emerges as the victor.
The ILCA-4 dinghy event at the Asian Games, part of the illustrious laser series, consists of a rigorous 11 races. Neha concluded her participation with an overall score of 32 points. It's worth noting that her fifth race, where she accrued five points, was identified as her weakest performance. After subtracting this score, her resultant net score stood at 27.
The ILCA-4 itself is renowned in the sailing community as a one-design class of sailboat in the laser series, emphasizing its importance in competitive sailing.
As India celebrates Neha Thakur's commendable achievement, the nation looks forward to more such moments of glory in the ongoing Asian Games.
