The Indian men's table tennis squad commenced their Asian Games 2023 journey with a resounding victory over Yemen on Friday, September 22. Competing in Hangzhou, China, the Indian contingent outclassed Yemen with a 3-0 scoreline.
The formidable Indian team, comprising Achanta Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, and Harmeet Desai, asserted their dominance from the outset. Sathiyan set the tone with a swift 11-3, 11-2, 11-6 victory against Yemen's Ali Omar Ahmed. Despite Sharath Kamal's recent dip below the top 100 global rankings, he made quick work of Yemen's Ebrahim Abdulhakim Mohamm Gubran, securing a win with scores of 11-3, 11-4, 11-6.
India's currently top-ranked player, Harmeet Desai, showcased his prowess by overpowering Magd Ahmed Ali Aldhubhani with a decisive 11-1, 11-1, 11-7.
This team is reminiscent of the one that shone brightly at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England. They clinched the gold medal, marking India's successive triumph in the event.
In the final match of the Commonwealth Games, the Indian squad faced Singapore and emerged victorious with a 3-1 score. The journey to the top wasn't without hurdles. National champion Sharath Kamal faced defeat in the second match of the tie, momentarily unsettling the team. However, seasoned players, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai, rose to the occasion, clinching their respective matches and ensuring India's gold.
Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, currently the top-ranked Indian player on the global stage, played an instrumental role in the team's success. His match against Singapore's Pang Yew En Koen stood out, as he rebounded from an initial lag to clinch the win. Similarly, Harmeet Desai's game against Zhe Yu Clarence Chew was pivotal. Despite a ranking disadvantage, Desai outmanoeuvred Chew with sharp returns, aiding India in securing consecutive gold medals.
Sharath Kamal further made waves by clinching the singles gold medal in table tennis at the same event. This accolade was his third Commonwealth title of Birmingham 2022, reinforcing his reputation as one of India's premier table tennis talents.
