27-year-old Jake Paul who is also a popular YouTuber defeated legendary boxer Mike Tyson by unanimous decision on November 15 in a much-awaited clash at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tyson who returned after 19 years of absence from the ring was not quick enough to match Paul but made all the way through to eight rounds (two minutes each). The judges ruled in Paul's favour by 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73.
Refuse to Retire
There was no knockout punch delivered by either of the two. Mike Tyson lost the high profile fight against Jake Paul that was streamed globally on Netflix at 58 years old, refused to retire from boxing. The former heavyweight champion suffered a unanimous decision defeat over eight rounds, landing only 18 punches, and was clearly a shadow of his former self. Despite the underwhelming performance, Tyson suggested he might return to the ring and even hinted at a potential fight with Jake Paul's older brother, Logan Paul, who faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition match last year.
When asked if this would be his last fight, Tyson responded, “I don’t think so. I don’t know, maybe I’ll fight his brother [Logan Paul].” Logan Paul appeared stunned by the challenge, replying, “I’d kill you Mike.”
His comment drew backlash on social media, with former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew criticizing Logan’s disrespectful tone. Bellew said, “Why be so disrespectful Logan Paul?? ‘I’d kill you,’ do these idiots understand what Mike Tyson would do to them! He’d beat them so bad they would beg for him to stop! Saying you’d kill a grandfather is tough isn’t it... I pray Mike stays safe.”
Tyson also revealed his biting fixation
Tyson also explained his odd behavior during the fight, where he repeatedly bit his glove, revealing it was due to a "biting fixation. Oh, I have a habit of biting my gloves, yeah. I have a biting fixation.” This seemed to be a playful reference to his infamous disqualification in the 1997 fight against Evander Holyfield, when Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear.
Tyson’s bout with Jake Paul marked his first professional fight since 2005, when he lost to Kevin McBride by knockout. However, Tyson did participate in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020. Meanwhile, Jake Paul’s victory improved his professional record to 11-1, with wins over several MMA fighters and lesser-known boxers.
