Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed profound pride after he was chosen as one of India's flag-bearers for the 19th Asian Games opening ceremony in Hangzhou this Saturday. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced Harmanpreet and Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain as the flag-bearers for India's robust 655-member squad.

Historically, India has seen illustrious sports personalities like Dhanraj Pillay, Jyoti Sunita Kullu, Gagan Narang, Sardar Singh, and Neeraj Chopra bear the flag at this continental extravaganza.

"Being named as the joint flag-bearer alongside Lovlina Borgohain for the Asian Games is a moment of immense pride for me. It is an opportunity to represent my country on an even larger scale, and I am truly humbled by this honour," Harmanpreet remarked in a statement released by Hockey India.

He further added, "I look forward to leading our contingent with all the enthusiasm and determination that has driven me throughout my career. This event is a testament to the unity and diversity of our nation, and I hope to carry our flag with the utmost pride and humility."

Harmanpreet's significant contribution to the Indian men's hockey team was evident during the Tokyo Olympics, where India clinched a bronze medal. His exceptional drag-flicking skills shone brightly, making him India's top scorer with six goals. More recently, under his leadership, India triumphed at the Asian Champions Trophy held in Chennai.

Discussing the team's preparation for the Asian Games, which doubles as an Olympic qualifier, Harmanpreet said, "We've put in diligent preparation for the tournament, and our entire team is brimming with confidence. Our primary focus is on the crucial group-stage matches. We won't underestimate any opponent... Our mindset is geared towards victory against all opponents."

He emphasised the team's ambition to maintain their high performance level from the Asian Champions Trophy and clinch the gold medal at the Asian Games, ensuring a direct spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the Asian Games hockey competition, the Indian men's team finds itself in Pool A with rivals like Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Uzbekistan. Their first challenge will be against Uzbekistan this Sunday
