Satwik-Chirag's rampage continues as star duo rocks world no. 1 to become first Indian doubles pair to win Korea Open

India's dazzling badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty toppled world no. 1 Indonesian pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto in a riveting three-game men's doubles final 17-21, 21-13, 21-14 to clinch the Korea Open 2023 title in Yeosu, Korea on Sunday.

 

The Asian Champions also became the first Indian doubles pair to win Korea Open.
 

This is the third Super 500 title of their career so far after Thailand Open 2019 and Yonex Sunrise India Open 2022 and third BWF World Tour title in 2023 as well, having previously won Swiss Open 2023 (Super 300) and Indonesia Open 2023 (Super 1000) earlier this year.

 

 

Satwik-Chirag were a game down as they lost the first game 17-21. However, the Indians launched a sensational comeback and clinched the following two games with a scoreline of 21-13, 21-14 and won the match.

 

Earlier, on Saturday, the Indian duo entered the final with a thrilling straight-game win over world number two Chinese pair of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang.

Satwik and Chirag had won the Indonesia Super 1000 and Swiss Open Super 500 titles this year.

 

The BWF World Tour is divided into six levels, namely World Tour Finals, four Super 1000, six Super 750, seven Super 500, and 11 Super 300.

One other category of the tournament, the BWF Tour Super 100 level, also offers ranking points. 

 

The Korea Open 2023 was held from July 18 to 23, and it was the fifth Super 500 tournament of the 2023 BWF World Tour. The tournament, organized by the Badminton Korea Association with sanction from the BWF, boasted a total prize pool of $420,000. The Men's Doubles winners, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, took home a prize money of $33,180.
