One of the most popular WWE stars in the world, John Cena has announced that he will retire from in ring competitions in 2025. Cena is all set to aid a goodbye to his iconic career that lasted for 20 years in the ring. Cena is a 16-time WWE Champion, who made his debut in year 2002 and was popular among fans for his iconic “you can’t see me” move.
He announced his retirement by making a surprise appearance at the “Money in the Bank’ event in Toronto on July 6. He hit the ring with an altered version of his iconic and love catchphrase “My Time is now” to “The last time is now”. His shirt too read “John Cena Farewell Tour”. As soon as Cena started to speak, the Toronto crowd got emotional pre-empting the situation and erupted with chants of “No! No! No!”.
‘WrestleMania will be my last’
“Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from WWE," said the 47-year-old. He later clarified that it wouldn't retire with immediate effect but in 2025 he will hang his boots. Cena said he will compete in the 2025 Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber for the last time and then at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium.
A mixed opinion out there
Cena while addressing the crowd spilled a secret by announcing WWE RAW’s deal with Netflix as it will be a part of Netflix from next year. Cena promised fans that he will be a part of the mega merger.
“RAW makes history next year when it moves to Netflix I've never been a part of Raw on Netflix that is history that is a first and I will be there and along with that history making first we are going to build so many unforgettable laughs,” he added.
Not an end to his WWE Legacy
Cena clarified at the post-show press conference that his retirement tour will take place from January to December 2025, with approximately 30-40 matches planned. He also said that even after he retires from in-ring competition, he will still be part of WWE "in some capacity for an extended time to come."
