Andy Murray returns to Britain's Davis Cup squad for Finals Group Stage in Manchester

After being notably absent during Great Britain’s 3-1 qualifying victory on Colombian clay in February, Andy Murray is back in the fold for Britain's Davis Cup squad. The tennis stalwart will be rejoining the team for their matches against formidable rivals Australia, France, and Switzerland in Manchester in the forthcoming month.

The 2015 victory of Britain in the Davis Cup, which marked the end of a 79-year-long hiatus from triumph, saw Murray playing a pivotal role. His omission earlier this year was attributed by British captain Leon Smith to the clay surface, which wasn't deemed suitable for Murray. At that point, Murray had a limited exposure to clay matches, having played only three since 2017. However, the former world number one is now set to re-enter the competitive arena.

The stage for the Finals Group will be set at Manchester's illustrious AO Arena from September 12-17. Alongside Murray, the squad boasts the likes of Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, and Neal Skupski. Their primary aim is to secure a spot in the knockout stage scheduled for November.

The challenges posed by Group B are formidable, with only two out of the four nations getting the green light to proceed to the quarter-finals, slated to be held in Malaga.

Expressing his anticipation for the matches, Smith remarked, "We can’t wait to play Davis Cup in Manchester in front of a huge home crowd."

“It’s been a long time since we played in the North West and I’m sure we are going to feel and hear a lot of energy from the fans.

"We have a great team with a lot of Davis Cup experience who will be ready to give it everything in a tough group with Australia, Switzerland and France," he added.
