Disaster for Spain adds them to unwanted list

It was a subpar performance from the Spanish side, who were stunned by Morocco in penalties in their Round of 16 game.

After a 0-0 draw, the Spanish Armada missed all three of their penalties as Morocco scored three of their four penalties.

Leading their charge and scoring the winning goal was Achraf Hakimi, who was ironically born in Spain.

This is also the third straight time that Spain have lost three consecutive FIFA World Cup penalty shootouts.

They lost in the same stage to Russia in 2018, and back in 2002 they lost to South Korea on penalties.

Only three teams, including Spain themselves, have the ignominy of being on this list.

Italy were eliminated from the competition on penalties for three straight campaigns — 1990, 1994 & 1998.

Then came England, who were eliminated on penalties in 1990 and 1998, and then in 2006.
