India's high jumper Tejaswin Shankar has got his name registered in the record books. He opened the account of India's medals in track and field event at Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.

Tejaswin Shankar won the first medal for India in track and field in the form of bronze. Not only this, Tejaswin became the first athlete to win a medal for India in the high jump at any Commonwealth Games.

Tejaswin won the bronze medal with a jump of 2.22m in the final of the men's high jump event on August 3.

Record-setter

During the final in Birmingham, Shankar jumped 2.10m, 2.15m, 2.19m and 2.22m in his first attempts.

Jump of glory

Tejaswin reached Birmingham three days back. He was the last name to join the Indian contingent to leave for Birmingham, but despite won the first medal for India in track and field.

The Athletics Federation of India had initially dropped Tejaswin, who was practicing in the USA, from the Indian team because he did not participate in India's national inter-state meet. After this, he challenged this decision in the Delhi High Court.

Fought odds to fire

Tejaswin was allowed to participate in the CWG at the behest of the Delhi High Court. He was eventually included in the Indian squad for the Games as a replacement for injured relay runner Arokia Rajeev.

Verdict in favour

Tejaswin finished 6th in the 2018 CWG. However, he improved a lot in the last four years. Tejaswin also holds a national record in high jump. He also recorded a jump of 2.27m this season. At the same time, his personal best is 2.29m.

Record-holder

In the final of the men's high jump, Hamish Kerr of New Zealand won the gold medal with a jump of 2.25m while Australia's Brandon Starc won the silver medal.
