Sushila's elder brother and uncle were Judokas. She trained at SAI in Manipur from 2007 to 2010, which also meant she did not have money to go out.

In addition to the CWG, Sushila won gold at the 2019 South Asian Games as well. She qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the first Indian woman to do so in Judo

Sushila considers India's legendary boxer MC Mary Kom as her role model and like her, wants to win medals in the World Championships and Olympics for the country.
