Three teams from Asia — Japan, South Korea and Australia — have made it to the Round of 16.

This is the 1st time in FIFA World Cup history that Asia has more teams than South American teams in the last 16.

Among the South American nations, only Argentina and Brazil have qualified for the Round of 16.

All three teams who have qualified have done so from a tough group.

Despite losing 4-1 to France, Australia beat Denmark and Tunisia in 1-0 victories and made it through.

South Korea held Uruguay to a 0-0 draw and lost 3-2 to Ghana, but their 2-1 win over Portugal took them to the knockouts.

But the biggest surprise among all the Asian countries has to be Japan.

The side beat Germany and Spain to finish on top of Group E, with Germany crashing out of the tournament.
