Barcelona defender and Spain legend Gerard Pique will play his last football match aged 35 on Saturday, he announced on Friday.

The decision comes as a shock, with the season still in session and the league breaking for the World Cup.

With Barcelona, Pique won 30 titles in what was the most successful period in the Blaugrana's history.

Only four players have played more for Barca than Pique's 614 — Lionel Messi (778), Xavi (767), Sergio Busquets (694), Andres Iniesta (674).

He also has 102 caps for Spain between 2009 and 2018, becoming one of just 13 players to feature 100 or more times for La Roja.

During his time with the Spain national team, Pique won the FIFA World Cup once in 2010, and the Euros once in 2012.

He scored five goals for Spain, all against different opponents, including three in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

His four Champions League trophies are also tied second, after Benzema, Carvajal, Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo, all of whom are on five.
