He recently joins a new list of star players, who played many games before becoming their team's captain.
Southee, making his captaincy debut against Pakistan, played 88 games before assuming this role
Anil Kumble had to wait for the longest, taking 118 matches to become the captain of India.
Steve Waugh waited for 111 games to become the captain of Australia.
AB de Villiers took 104 games to become the captain of South Africa.
Jacques Kallis also captained South Africa, 98 games after making his debut.
Coming back to India, Dilip Vengsarkar was made skipper after 95 games.
