The news comes in as a relief for the San Francisco 49ers with the All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams ending his month-long holdout. It is a massive boost to the teams O-line (Offensive) line as the squad prepares and looks forward to the upcoming season with high hopes of building on their success from last year.
The 11-time Pro Bowl selection returns but it also coincides with the team's first practice session since Thursday, 29th August following a four-day break for Labor Day weekend. 49ers also struck a deal for a four-year, $120 million extension with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who ended his own contract dispute. Tuesday, 3rd September will be the first day when Aiyuk is expected for practice with the team.
Things will work out with Trent: Coach Kyle Shanahan
While Aiyuk’s negotiations were more contentious after being granted a green signal for a trade, the 49ers were hopeful of reaching an agreement with Williams. Coach Kyle Shanahan noted, “I’m optimistic that things will work out with Trent. When two sides want to get a deal done, usually it happens.”

Years remaining on his contract
Despite having three more years remaining on his contract, Williams was hoping for a pay hike to reflect his stature as one of the league’s top offensive tackles. His new deal should help mitigate roughly $4 million in fines he incurred for missing training camp and three preseason games.
According to the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, these are non-forgivable fines and they can only be waived off on one condition which is that the player should be on their rookie contract.
Massive Boost to 49ers
It is a massive boost to the 49ers’ offense with the return of Trent. Even at 36, he remains one of the league's best pass protectors. He also possesses great running skills where he contributes to the team’s wide-zone running scheme. With his presence itself, it will provide valuable mentorship to younger offensive linemen.
While the 49ers have other concerns along their offensive line, Williams’ return is a significant step in strengthening a key position. His leadership and experience will undoubtedly benefit the team as they aim for another successful season.
