Story Highlights:

Edwards-Helaire was released by the Chiefs on December 16 after seeing no playing time this season.

Kicker Matthew Wright, however, may have a more compelling argument for returning to the Chiefs.

With the conclusion of Wild Card Weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs now know that they will face the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. This gives the team time to fully prepare for their upcoming game, including the potential for some roster adjustments before the Saturday matchup.

Though major roster moves seem unlikely, especially since players on injured reserve could return, there are still possibilities. One key development this week is that players who were on practice squads for teams eliminated from the playoffs are now free agents, creating an opportunity for teams like the Chiefs to make additions.

The Return of Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Matthew Wright?

Two former Chiefs—running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and kicker Matthew Wright—are now available to sign, potentially rejoining Kansas City for their playoff run.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire's Journey and Return Possibility

Edwards-Helaire was released by the Chiefs on December 16 after seeing no playing time this season. Following his departure, he joined the New Orleans Saints practice squad and was later promoted to their active roster in Week 17. Over the course of his limited appearances, Edwards-Helaire had 13 carries for 46 yards and three receptions for 24 yards.

Although he did not play much during his time with the Chiefs, head coach Andy Reid is known for keeping the door open for former players, meaning a return for Edwards-Helaire is not out of the question.

Matthew Wright: A Kicker With a Strong Case for Rejoining the Chiefs

Kicker Matthew Wright, however, may have a more compelling argument for returning to the Chiefs. Current kicker Harrison Butker has shown inconsistency after his return from injury, missing an extra point in Week 16 and failing to convert a field goal attempt in Week 17. This has led to some fans calling for Wright’s reunion, especially after his impressive performance across three teams this season, going 6-for-6 on extra points and 15-for-16 on field goal attempts.

The Likelihood of Roster Changes

While the possibility of either Edwards-Helaire or Wright rejoining the roster is still uncertain, the chances are relatively low, with an estimated likelihood of around a four on a scale of one to 10. However, the Chiefs must consider these options seriously as they evaluate their roster heading into the postseason.

Ultimately, while it’s unlikely that major changes will occur, Kansas City will certainly continue to monitor the situation closely as they make their final preparations for the Divisional Round against the Texans.
