India's star wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant reacted swiftly, sprinting forward to complete a clean catch. However, the on-field umpires decided to review the catch to ensure the ball hadn't touched the ground after hitting Shakib's boot. Ultimately, the review confirmed the catch, sealing Shakib's fate and adding to the excitement of the match.

Bangladesh struggles against India's bowling

The Bangladeshi batting lineup faced another setback with the dismissal of Shakib Al Hasan. Shakib, considered the backbone of the team, had been trying to stabilize the innings but was unable to make a significant impact, scoring 32 runs from 64 balls. His departure further increased the pressure on the remaining Bangladeshi batters, who were already struggling to counter India's bowling attack. India's pace duo, Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep, had earlier rattled Bangladesh's top order, claiming five wickets between them. Ravindra Jadeja also picked up two wickets, while Mohammed Siraj impressed with one wicket. Shakib's 32 remains the highest score for Bangladesh in the ongoing Test series against India.

Bangladesh's decision to bowl first did not come to fruition

Bangladesh's decision to bowl first after winning the toss in the Chennai Test appears to have been a strategic error. This is the ninth instance where a visiting team has opted to field first in a Test match in India. In the previous eight such encounters, six ended in draws. Australia, however, managed to win the remaining two matches, defeating India by convincing 10-wicket margins at Wankhede Stadium in 2001 and Eden Gardens in 1969.

While the last match against Sri Lanka in 2017 was a rain-affected draw, the West Indies' victory over Afghanistan in Lucknow in 2019 after bowling first suggests that India has a strong advantage in this series. Given the historical context and current conditions, India is well-positioned to win the Chennai Test against Bangladesh.

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin's impressive century, combined with fifties from Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal, helped India reach a total of 376 runs in the first innings of the Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai.
