Shubman Gill smashed a magnificent century on Day 3 of the first Test against Bangladesh.

Shubman Gill scored 119 runs off 176 balls to help India set 515-run target for Bangladesh.

Indian opener Shubman Gill silenced his critics with a brilliant century in the second innings of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. The young batter's impressive knock not only helped India dominate the match but also broke a long-standing record held by his teammate Virat Kohli.

Shubman Gill's 5th Test century silences critics

Gill had faced criticism after being dismissed for a duck in the first innings. However, he bounced back in style, reaching the three-figure mark in the second innings. His century propelled him to the second spot in the list of Indian batsmen with the most centuries, trailing only captain Rohit Sharma.

Shubman Gill continued his impressive form, reaching his fifth Test century during India's second innings against Bangladesh. The 25-year-old achieved the milestone by taking a single off Mehidy Hasan Miraz's bowling. Gill's innings, spanning 160 balls, included nine fours and three sixes. It was his second Test century against Bangladesh. India's batting had struggled earlier in the second innings, with the team losing three wickets for just 67 runs. However, a crucial partnership between Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill stabilized the innings. Pant scored a valuable 109 runs, while Gill remained unbeaten on 119. India eventually declared their innings at 287/4, setting Bangladesh a challenging target of 515 runs to win the match.

Gill's century against Bangladesh also marked his fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC). With this achievement, he surpassed the century tallies of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Mayank Agarwal, who each have four centuries in the WTC. However, Rohit Sharma continues to dominate the list of most centuries by Indian batsmen in the WTC. Having scored nine centuries in 33 WTC matches, Rohit Sharma is likely to hold this record for a significant period, given the substantial gap between him and the second-ranked batter.
