India's star shuttler PV Sindhu has created history by finally winning gold at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham on Monday, August 8. The 27-year-old Olympic medallist defeated Michelle Li in the final to secure the coveted yellow medal as India looks to finish Day 11 with as many as five gold medals.

Sindhu beat her opponent in straight sets to win the gold medal for India and ended her inconsistent run in individual badminton tournaments in 2022. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist downed her opponent 21-15, 21-13 as she won her third medal in the competition.

It was a calm and cool performance from PV Sindhu, who had a not-so-easy run to the final with her competitors. She won her first match against Maldives' Fatima Abdul Razzaq by a margin of 21-4, 21-11. The second match saw her beat Uganda's Husina Kubugabe 21-10, 21-9. In the quarterfinals against Jin Wei Goh of Malaysia, Sindhu won 19-21, 21-14, 21-18. The semi-finals fixture was a tough challenge, but Sindhu still managed to overcome Jin Min Yeo 21-19, 21-17 to make it to the final.

Her opponent Lee made many net errors this time around, perhaps unable to cope with the pressure of the tournament. However, she herself is a former Commonwealth winner, having secured the gold in 2014 in Glasgow.

This is Sindhu's third medal in CWG, having won bronze in 2014 and losing to compatriot Saina Nehwal in 2018 on Gold Coast. She also won silver in the mixed team event, meaning that the star shuttler has two medals in the competition.

Her medal also pushed India above New Zealand into fourth on the points table, having secured 56 medals, and another four more assures till now. These include 19 golds, 15 silvers and 22 bronze medals.
