Pakistan presenter Zainab Abbas, part of the International Cricket Council (ICC) digital team covering the ODI World Cup on October 9 left India amid backlash on social media over her alleged anti-India posts. While there were reports that Zainab was deported, the ICC insisted that she flew back home due to personal reasons.
A few days after going back home from Hyderabad where she was covering Pakistan's World Cup matches, the 35-year-old took to Twitter, formerly known as X to share why she left India.
Here’s Zainab’s full statement -
I have always felt extremely fortunate and grateful for the opportunities to travel and present the sport I love - this one would have been extra special.
My daily interactions with everyone during my stay were kind, cheerful, and with a sense of familiarity - just as I had expected. I was neither asked to leave nor was I deported. However, I felt intimidated and scared by the reaction that was unfolding online. And even though there was no immediate threat to my safety, my family, and friends from both sides of the border were concerned. I needed some space and time to reflect on what had transpired.
I understand and deeply regret the hurt caused by the posts that were circulated. I wish to make clear that they do not represent my values or who I am as a person today. There is no excuse or space for such language, and I sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended.
Also, I am truly grateful to those who were concerned and reached out during this challenging time.
Pakistan commentators in India
Meanwhile, former cricketers turned commentators Rameez Raja and Waqar Younis who are part of ICC commentary panel stayed in India. Raja and Younis have commentated in Pakistan’s two matches so far against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka which were played in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
High-octane clash ahead
India will take on Pakistan in the much-anticipated clash at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on October 14. Babar Azam-led side will have a chance to beat India in ODI World Cup for the first time.
