Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has been facing widespread criticism after the team's early exit from T20 World Cup 2024. The finalists of the previous edition signed off with a consolation three-wicket win over Ireland on June 16. In the post-match press conference, Babar said that he has not plans to step down as captain and the decision lies with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Asked repeatedly about the team’s dismal show in the marquee event under his leadership, Babar lost his patience and said he can’t play in everyone’s place.
"...everyone is sad. As a team, we did not play. I told you that we did not lose this because of one person," he responded to the reporter.
"We are losing as a team. I am not saying this because of one person. You are pointing out that because of the captain, I cannot play in every player's place. There are 11 players and each of them has a role.
"I think we as a team have not been able to apply, follow and finish things. We have to settle down and accept that we didn't play well as a team."
Need to assess conditions better
After two losses, Babar gave up the opening spot for Saim Ayub and batted at no.3. As Pakistan suffered batting collapses in three out of their four appearances, Babar said there is a need to adapt to the conditions. He also pointed out that batters have struggled in general on bowling-friendly pitches.
"You need to assess the conditions, what's the demand here. If you follow that then - tell me how many matches have been played here and there's been outstanding batting?
"There's been a struggle, but you need to be proactive about what's required here. I think it's about game awareness and common sense, which is what is required here," said the 29-year-old.
Babar’s patient knock
In the run chase against Ireland, Babar walked out to bat in the fifth over of the run chase. Pakistan were 52/2 in the ninth over. They lost four wickets for just 10 runs. Babar held on to one end and shared a crucial 33-run partnership for the seventh wicket before Shaheen Afridi finished the run chase with two maximums. The skippe remained unbeaten for 32 off 34 balls including two fours.
