West Indies announce squad for T20 World Cup 2024, pick young pacer yet to make his T20I debut

Shamar Joseph is yet to make his T20I debut.

Joseph has not been in good form in IPL 2024.

Two-time T20 champions and co-hosts West Indies have announced their squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Rovman Powell will lead the side. West Indies’ young fast-bowling sensation Shamar Joseph who is yet to make his T20I debut has been included in the 15-man squad.  
 

West Indies’ T20 World Cup 2024 squad -

Rovman Powell (c), Alzarri Joseph, Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd

 

West Indies' team features three fast-bowling all-rounders in Holder, Russell and Shepherd. They have included two spinners in Motie and Hosein. Also, Chase can contribute with right-arm off-spin as well. Their frontline pacer is Alzarri can bat as well. It will be interesting to see if Shamar gets his debut cap straightaway or not. 

 

Mayers fails to make the cut

One notable exclusion from the squad is Kyle Mayers. The batting all-rounder has not made an appearance for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. 

 

Deadline to make changes

All 20 teams participating in the event can make changes to the squad till May 25. After that, the board will need to take permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make changes. 

 

West Indies' group stage schedule 

West Indies have been placed in Group C alongside Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Uganda. Powell-led side will begin their campaign at Providence Stadium, Guyana on June 2. They will face Uganda for the first time at the mega event at the same venue on June 8. Their first tough game will be against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand at Brian Lara Stadiu, Trinidad on June 12. Then, they will move to St Lucia where they will face Rashid Khan's Afghanistan at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on June 17.
