Musheer Khan, brother of Sarfaraz has been in sensational form in the ongoing Under-19 World Cup 2024. In the Super Six stage, Musheer scored 131 against New Zealand, his second century of the tournament. The century came a day after his brother Sarfaraz received his maiden Test call-up ahead of the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam.
Earlier, New Zealand skipper Oscar Jackson won the toss and opted to bowl first. Musheer had to walk out to bat early as Arshin Kulkarni departed in the fifth over. Musheer batted with a blend of caution and aggression. He shared a 77-run partnership for the second wicket with Adarsh Singh who scored 52 runs. Musheer reached his half-century from 61 balls in the 25th over.
Musheer and skipper Uday Saharan shared an 87-run partnership for the third wicket. Wicketkeeper-batter Aravelly Avanish hit a couple of sixes but lost his wicket in the 42nd over. In the next over, Musheer reached his century from 109 balls. He decided to accelerate and hit a few boundaries before losing his wicket to Mason Clarke in the 48th over. His 131 off 126 balls was laced with 13 fours and three sixes. Musheer's knock helped India post a total of 295/8 at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein.
Can Musheer break Dhawan's record?
Musheer’s 131-run knock is the fifth-highest score by an Indian batter in Under-19 World Cup history. Musheer is currently the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 325 runs from four innings. He became the second Indian batter to score two or more centuries in a single Under-19 World Cup edition. He is only behind Shikhar Dhawan who scored three centuries in the 2003/04 edition.
He has sights on South Africa’s Dewald Brevis’ record of most runs in a single edition. Brevis scored 506 runs from six innings whereas Dhawan scored 505 runs from seven innings. He needs 182 more runs to go past Brevis and Dhawan. India face Nepal in their next Super Six clash which will be followed by the semi-final and the final. If defending champions India play all three matches, Musheer may rewrite the record books.
