Indian women's cricket team's star pacer Arundhati Reddy has been reprimanded by the ICC for breaching the Code of Conduct during the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 match against Pakistan on October 6.
ICC reprimands Indian pacer Arundhati Reddy for Code of Conduct breach
Reddy was found guilty of violating Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct, which prohibits using language, actions, or gestures that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter.
The Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel is exercised for “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match”.
The incident occurred in the final over of the first innings when Reddy gestured towards the pavilion after dismissing Nida Dar. India won the match by six wickets, and Reddy, who dazzled with a splendid bowling figure of 3/19, was adjudged the Player of the Match.
Not just this, besides getting reprimanded, Arundhati Reddy has received a one-demerit point penalty for her breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. This was her first offense in a 24-month period. The on-field umpires and third umpire assessed the incident and leveled the charges against Reddy. She admitted to the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, avoiding a formal hearing. Level 1 breaches carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a 50 per cent deduction in match fees, along with demerit points.
Arundhati Reddy's outstanding bowling performance was instrumental in restricting Pakistan to a modest total of 105 runs. Her wickets of Nida Dar, Omaima Sohail, and Aliya Riaz played a key role in setting the stage for India's victory by six wickets.
The dismissal of Nida Dar, Pakistan's top scorer with 28 runs, was particularly significant. Dar's dismissal in the final stage of the innings prevented Pakistan from posting a higher total. Reddy's aggressive reaction after the dismissal, fueled by the intense rivalry, resulted in the disciplinary action.
India women will next face Sri Lanka on October 9 and then lock horns with Australia on October 13.
