WTC 2025 Points Table Latest Updates: Rohit Sharma-led India's chances of making it to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-2025 final has hit a roadblock after South Africa's series sweep against Sri Lanka following 109-run in second Test. Following their recent 10-wicket defeat to Australia at the Adelaide Oval, their qualification hopes were dented.
South Africa's clean sweep over Sri Lanka jeopardises India's WTC final chances
India had been at the top of the WTC points table after their series win against Bangladesh. With three home Tests remaining, they needed only five more wins from eight matches to secure a spot in the final. However, their humiliating series sweep against New Zealand severely impacted their chances.
Nevertheless, India began the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 with a strong start, defeating Australia by a convincing margin of 295 runs. This victory bolstered their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final. However, their momentum was halted by a loss in the second Test at Adelaide.
The defeat in Adelaide resulted in India slipping to third place on the WTC points table. On top of that, South Africa's superb show against Sri Lanka improved their chances of securing a spot in the final.
South Africa's convincing 109-run win in the second Test against Sri Lanka has propelled them to the top of the WTC 2023-2025 points table with a PCT of 63.33 per cent. They now require just one more win from their remaining two Tests against Pakistan to secure their place in the final.
With South Africa's qualification almost certain, India's path to the WTC final has become more challenging. India will need to produce exceptional performances in the remaining three Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to secure their spot in the final.
What India need to do to qualify for WTC 2023-2025 final?
India's qualification for the WTC final hinges on their performance in the last three Tests against Australia. Any loss would apparently diminish their chances. To strengthen their position, India must aim for a 3-1 series victory. Even a 2-1 win might not guarantee their qualification.
A 2-1 series win would require Sri Lanka to whitewash Australia in their upcoming series to boost India's chances. A 2-2 draw in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy would leave India's qualification hopes tied to Sri Lanka's performance against Australia. A 2-0 series win or two draws for Sri Lanka could potentially secure India's place in the final with a PCT of 55.26%. In such a scenario, India would qualify over Australia based on a higher number of series wins during the WTC cycle.
